Barnesville thrived as an agricultural area from 1880 to 1910, providing wheat for the Red River Valley. Potatoes were added to the wheat crop and by 1908 were being grown in great numbers. The Potato Days Festival was started due to this significant crop and continues today. It is held annually at the end of August and approximately 14,000 people attend the festival each year.

The fall Festival in another attraction and the Lutefisk Dinner and Hometown Christmas Celebration is held each holiday season.
